Vulnerable Adults

Kent Free Library is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all community members, including vulnerable adults. While the Library takes reasonable measures to promote patron safety, it cannot guarantee the safety of unattended vulnerable adults on Library property. 

A parent, guardian, or caregiver age 18 or older is responsible for supervising vulnerable adults and managing their behavior during Library visits. A parent, guardian, or caregiver is responsible for ensuring that the vulnerable adult in their care complies with the Library’s Patron Behavior Policy. 

Kent Free Library defines a vulnerable adult as an individual age 18 or older whose mental or physical condition impairs their ability use the Library safely and independently and who, in the judgment of Library staff, may be at risk. Staff may determine an individual’s ability to care for themselves based on direct observation, interactions with the patron, or prior knowledge of their mental or physical limitations.

The Library follows these guidelines regarding the care and behavior of vulnerable adults:

  • The Library assumes no responsibility for vulnerable adults left unattended, including during emergencies.
  • Library staff cannot monitor or prevent vulnerable adults from leaving the Library building or grounds and cannot assume responsibility for their care.
  • Library staff may attempt to contact a parent, guardian, or caregiver if an unattended individual’s health or safety is in question, the individual becomes frightened or agitated, or their behavior disrupts patrons or staff.
  • If Library staff have immediate concerns about the safety or well-being of a vulnerable adult, the Library may contact local law enforcement.
  • If a vulnerable adult is unattended and/or without transportation at Library closing, the Library may contact local law enforcement.
  • Library staff cannot transport vulnerable adults to any location, regardless of a request from the individual or their parent, guardian, or caregiver.

Parents, guardians, or caregivers who fail to comply with this policy may have their library privileges restricted or revoked.
