Political Activity and Displays

Kent Free Library seeks to make information available and learning possible for the community. The Library maintains its professional reputation as a nonpartisan, nonsectarian, non-biased place for the sharing and exchange of ideas. To avoid the appearance of an endorsement of any candidate for office or issue appearing on a ballot, the Library will follow this policy concerning political and/or election related literature and displays:

  • The Library will not display any literature or campaign materials of individual candidates for office.
  • Displays of literature about ballot issues are permitted on a space available basis.
  • Election related materials on display must be from registered political action committees.
  • Published materials that provide an overview of an upcoming election, such as the Voters Guide
from the League of Women Voters, are permitted.
  • Display of election related materials will be separate from the public bulletin boards.
  • No signage may be posted outdoors on the Library building, grounds or property prior to
    Election Days.
  • On Election Days, when the Library serves as a polling location, campaign signage may be placed
outdoors in areas designated by poll workers from the Board of Elections.
  • Candidates for office and political action committees may not use the Library as a location to
    distribute yard signs.

The Library is not responsible for acquiring election related materials, replacing them, or seeing that all issues are represented. If display space becomes limited, local (Portage County) issues will take priority. Materials will be displayed for thirty days before an Election Day. The Library will discard the materials after the Election Day. Display of election related materials does not constitute an endorsement by the Library, the Board of Trustees, or the Library staff. The Library makes no claim as to the accuracy of the material.
