Adventures in Circles: Quilt Designs from Start to Finish

Adventures in Quilting

with Leigh E. McDonald

Wednesday July 23, 7 - 8:30 pm

Leigh McDonald, fiber artist, quilting instructor, and author, will visit
the Kent Free Library on July 23 to talk about quilting and her latest
book, Adventures in Circles: Quilt Designs from Start to Finish.

Whether you are a quilter or just appreciate artistry in fabric, you will
enjoy hearing McDonald talk about her work, which uses a variety of
techniques including hand painted and dyed fabric, embroidery, beading and
collage.  Attendees may also view a display of McDonald's quilts, some of
which were recently exhibited at the Canton Art Museum.

McDonald, a former Kent resident, has received many awards for her quilts,
and her work has appeared in juried shows and in galleries throughout Ohio
and the Midwest.  McDonald's inspiration is the world around her: "My work
is influenced by nature; birds, animals or landscapes often appear," says
McDonald.

Wu Shangwei, Shaolin Fighting Monk

Thursday July 17th, 7 - 8:30

Wu Shangwei will give a talk on and demonstration of kung fu.  Shangwei, a
26-year-old monk from China, brings with him teachings that go back 1,500
years.  At 13, he entered the Shaolin (Sh-ow-lyn) temple to begin
his training as a "fighting monk," an ancient order of monks that train in
martial arts and mental discipline.  Shangwei is truly special, as he is 1
of only 100 of these fighting monks in the world.

The Shaolin fighting monks are known throughout the world for their highly
developed skills in martial arts.  They travel extensively giving
demonstrations of their dexterity and physical ability and talking about
maintaining a Shaolin lifestyle in the modern world.

Registration necessary; stop by or call the Reference Desk at 330.673.4414.
