Class Descriptions

Introduction to Computers
Prerequisites:
None
Description
:  Introduction to Computers is for those just starting to learn to use a computer or those who aren’t sure yet if the computer is for them.  Attendees will learn some of the terminology and what they can do on a computer once they’ve mastered the basics.  Attendees will actually get their hands on the computer as they learn to “mousercise”!

Introduction to the World Wide Web
Prerequisites
: Intro to Computers or understanding of Windows and ability to use the mouse
Description
:  For anyone who’s ever been told “you can find that on our website,” and not known how to do that, this class will show them how!  Attendees will hear a brief history of the rise of the Web and an overview of who’s using it today and how.  Then the class will cover how to go to websites and navigate them.  Finally, attendees will learn how to find information using portals.  (Internet Explorer is the browser).

Basic Web Searching
Prerequisites
:  Intro to the WWW or experience using the WWW
Description
:  There’s lots of information on the Web; but sometimes finding it can be difficult!  In this class, attendees will learn how to use Google, the premier web search engine, to search the Web effectively and find what they want.  The class also covers who authors websites and how to tell an authoritative website from one that maybe isn’t totally accurate.  (Internet Explorer is the browser).

Setting up a Free E-Mail Account
Prerequisites
: Intro to the WWW or experience using the WWW.
Description
:  Sending e-mail is easy, and is not only a great way to stay connected with friends and family, it’s a way to get updates and reminders from utilities and businesses—even the Kent Free Library!  During this class, attendees learn how to set up a free e-mail account. Google’s e-mail service.  The class also covers e-mail etiquette, spam, and how to avoid e-mail scams.

Basic Microsoft Word
Prerequisites
:  Intro to Computers or understanding of Windows and ability to use the mouse.
Description
:  During this class, attendees create, format, and save a short letter in Microsoft Word.  Attendees will also learn how to use the convenient Kent Free Library computer lab for working on and printing word processing documents.

Topical Internet Classes - Topic varies each month.
Prerequisites
: Basic Web Searching or significant experience using the WWW.
At the Topical Internet Classes, attendees explore recommended websites and library databases on a particular topic and learn advanced search techniques for finding information online. Topics for each month are listed below.

January: Online Sleuthing— This class is for those who want to check into somebody’s background, get some info on a company before doing business with them, or find out more about their neighborhood.  This information and much more is available in public records, which are often conveniently online!  Attendees will learn how to find and use resources that will keep them one step ahead!

February: Shopping on E-Bay— Millions of people shop the auction site eBay.  In this class, attendees learn how to set up a free account, how to find that elusive treasure, and how to bid or just watch.  Note:  This class will NOT address selling on eBay.

March:  Gardening Resources Online— As Northeast Ohioans start to plan their gardens, this class will help them explore the many resources online for finding information, advice, purveyors of hard-to-find seeds and plants, and online stores to buy gardening tools.

April: Online Recipes and Cooking Resources—If you love swapping recipes and sharing tips for cooking and baking, you will want to explore some of the many online communities dedicated to food!  Learn how to find and participate in these communities, and how to explore other resources to make your cooking even better!

May:  Online Travel Information—Wherever you may be going this summer, you can find resources online to help plan your trip.  Learn tips on researching your lodging, dining, and activities before you go.  Find online directions and maps that will keep you on course.  Read reviews from other travelers, and learn how you can share your own critiques once you get home!

To Register:
Registration for classes begins on the first of the month preceding the class.  Stop by or call the reference desk at 330.673.4414.  Attendees are taken on a first come, first serve basis, and seats are limited to ten (10) per class.  A waiting list will be available for classes that are filled; those on the waiting list will be called the day before if a seat opens up.
